3 Great Algae Eaters!

So, you want to find some fish to rid your freshwater aquarium of algae? That’s great! Better to have fish do it than chemicals or the like.

But, what fish will get the job done? Here are a few to consider:

American Flag Fish – These fish, originating near Florida, can handle slightly alkaline waters. They have a beautiful coloration, get up to around 2 inches and eat green hair, black and brown algae.

Farlowella Pleco or Whiptail Cat – These long fish get up to 6 inches in length and can survive in pH levels between 6.5 and 7.2. Coming from Venezuela, these scavengers eat algae growing on glass, rocks, plants and wood.

Hillstream Loach – This neat looking fish from China gets up to 2.5 inches and lives well in a pH level of 6.7. It’ll eat algae on glass and plants and act of a beautiful addition to your aquarium.
