Saving the World with Aquaculture

With the population growing more rapidly every year, people are beginning to wonder how we are going to feed so many mouths. Although the task may seem daunting, it is not without a solution. If you have never heard of aquaculture, it is an ancient form of agriculture that has been making a comeback in recent years. That is a good thing, because it can generate more food than ever thought possible.

Traditional forms of fishing are no longer working. A majority of the world’s fish population is overfished, and it won’t last forever using the same old techniques. Where there were once treasure troves of endless salmon, trout and more, there is now emptiness. However, aquaculture has quickly become a $60 billion per year industry that can not only protect the world’s supply of fish, but save us from hunger.

While typical fishing involves catching large quantities of fish with nets, aquaculture thrives by breeding and raising fish in carefully controlled environments. With these environments, we can resupply the world’s fish population, allowing for an endless stock of strong and healthy aquatic life that can be used for food. In addition to fish, aquaculture is used to breed crabs, mollusks and more.

In a way, aquaculture uses the concept of aquariums to raise and grow healthy fish.
